Extern is proud to deliver the Southside Youth Initiative, a Youth Diversion Project (YDP) located in Southside Limerick City.

This community-based, multi-agency initiative focuses on preventing youth involvement in anti-social and criminal behaviour. By engaging young people in tailored activities, the project aims to promote civic responsibility, foster personal development, and enhance long-term employability prospects.

Through this initiative, we strive to create positive opportunities and pathways for young people, empowering them to build brighter futures and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Our Service

Extern is delivering the Janus Justice Programme, a specialist initiative supporting young people aged 12-24 across Limerick City, County, and Co. Clare.

This programme targets young people engaged in offending behaviour who may also face complex challenges such as addiction, homelessness, or mental health issues. Through tailored, intensive one-to-one interventions, Janus Justice provides critical support to those at high risk of custody, an escalation in offending/anti-social behaviour, or disengagement from the Youth Diversion Programme.

The programme focuses on addressing criminogenic risk factors while promoting pro-social skills, improving community involvement, offering experiential learning opportunities, and supporting family relationships to create positive change.

Our Service

The Time Out Programme is designed to enhance the quality of life for service users within their communities by promoting wellbeing, independence, and healthy life choices.

This innovative programme supports service users and their families by offering respite as an alternative to short-term or long-term care. Respite is provided through emergency or planned overnight stays at Extern-approved facilities, typically lasting one to two nights. These stays are tailored to provide social, educational, cultural, and recreational experiences, creating a meaningful and supportive break for those in need.

In addition to overnight breaks, the programme also offers scope for day or outreach support, ensuring flexibility to meet the diverse needs of service users and their families.

Operating across Limerick City and County, Co. Clare, and North Tipperary, the programme supports young people aged 8-17 who face significant challenges such as behavioural issues, offending, self-esteem struggles, and mental health difficulties. Its mission is clear: prevent young people from entering care and support those transitioning home from residential care or custody, empowering them to thrive in the lowest level of care possible—ideally within their families.
