Youth Diversion Projects

YDPs work with young people aged 12-17 at risk of, or who are involved in, anti-social and/or criminal behaviour, helping them to stop their offending and become positive contributors to society

This project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union - www.eufunds.ie

The projects offer opportunities for education, employment and training as well as sport, art, music and other activities.

The service is flexible and provided on days and times that best meet the needs of the service users, including evenings. Likewise, we can bring the services to them rather than relying on them ‘self-presenting’.

Diversions in the form of overnight stays are also used to get young people out of their everyday environments and provide opportunities for learning and development.

Early Intervention

Early intervention is defined as ‘providing support at the earliest possible stages when problems occur’ (Prevention and Early Intervention Network).

We support those children aged 8-11, who have been identified by youth justice workers, or by others working in the community, as at risk of future offending, by virtue of the behaviours and/or family circumstances present at such an early age.

Northbay YDP does this by delivering weekly in school interventions to children referred by their school to our Right Track programme.

Family Support

The purpose of Family Support in the context of YDPs is to support those families of young people who have offended or are at risk of offending, with the aim to reduce the offending behaviour.

The target group for the YDP Family Support Service are exclusively for those families of young people who are participants of a YDP or have been referred to a YDP.

We provide a flexible services to adapt to individual families’ circumstances so that responses can be needs-led.

Referrals are made through a Garda Juvenile Liaison Officer (JLO), Education Welfare Officer, school or Youthreach programme, community organisations or self-referral from families and young people.
