Extern appoints new CEO Extern’s Chief Operating Officer, Leslie Ann Scott, to take up CEO role on 2nd December 2024
Extern has appointed Leslie Ann Scott as its new Chief Executive, taking over leadership of the charity dedicated to supporting families, young people and individuals who are most marginalised in our society across the island of Ireland.
Ms Scott brings extensive experience from within Extern’s front line service delivery, management of services and in recent years leading the organisation’s island-wide operations as Chief Operating Officer.
Aideen D’Arcy, Group Chair, Extern said “Leslie Ann’s deep understanding of service delivery, the increasing complexity of personal challenges for the people who engage Extern Services, and the greater needs of society, is exceptional. This far-reaching expertise will be essential to enable Extern to respond appropriately to the complex needs within communities and the people who use our services. We wish Leslie Ann much happiness and fulfilment in her new role.
On accepting the role as CEO, Leslie Ann Scott said: “I am thrilled to take on the role to lead Extern, I feel humbled and at the same time excited about the future. Our work is so much more than any one person can take on by themselves, that is why I am so proud of the exceptional staff team who work across our organisation, and in partnership with our funding commissioners we meet the ever-changing needs of the people who use our services without judgement.

Of the charity’s outgoing CEO Colin Hayburn, Group Chair, Aideen D’Arcy said: “Speaking on behalf of everyone involved with Extern, Colin has made a tremendous difference to the organisation. His empathy for our work and dedicated engagement with all our stakeholders has been impressive and we will miss his vision and leadership, but he leaves behind a thriving organisation. We wish him every success and happiness for the future.”
Extern is commissioned by public sector bodies and government departments across the island of Ireland. The organisation delivers services to support, house and engage adults, young people, families and children who are; facing family breakdown, displaced from their country of origin, living with an offending past, dealing with alcohol and drug issues, street homeless or facing homelessness, living with the impact of suicide, dealing with mental health issues, engaging in alternative education and employability supports, looked after children and members of the traveller community.
