Extern, the leading social justice Charity has today called for additional Government funding for the TUSLA Child and Family Agency to ensure that appropriate resources and infrastructure exists for the assessment and supports of both Foster Carers and vulnerable young people in the Care System.

Extern, the leading social justice Charity, has today announced that it will take responsibility for the Public Health Agency-commissioned services that were previously provided by FASA (Forum for Action on Substance Abuse). From today, Monday 11 April 2016, Extern will take responsibility for a total of six PHA-funded contracts covering youth, mental health and suicide support and drug and alcohol support services, and 27 former staff members who had been previously employed by FASA to deliver these services.

The Practice Development Team represented Extern at the Whiting and Birch International Practice Learning Conference held in the Europa Hotel, Belfast from the 4th – 6th of April. The conference was attended by professionals and academics from a range of disciplines in health and social care from all around the world who are involved in the provision of practice placements to students. Ciaran Traynor delivered two presentations in collaboration with the DHSSPS and the Northern Ireland Degree in Social Work Partnership both of which were well received by delegates.

week ‘Say Yes to Mental Health Awareness’ Programme

The programme was funded by the Department of Education.

Suicide rates in the Traveller community is 7 times higher than the general population and Travellers do not engage with services until it is too late.
Traveller mental health is one of the key targets in the All Ireland Traveller Health Study (2010) and it is widely acknowledged that Travellers need a lot support.

The Electrical training department which opened in October 2015 is already achieving positive outcomes for its students. Amir Eltom is one of the first students to complete his City & Guilds Level 1 in Electrical installations qualification. He has also just been successful in gaining full-time employment. Amir was supported by his Skills Tutor to gain his qualification and the Development Team who supported him in his search for employment.
