What is Third Space?

Third Space is a project supported through €3.99m of EU funding under the European Union's Peace IV programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB,

It is a new cross border project being delivered by Extern, the leading social justice charity and Verbal the lead organisation promoting the power of the spoken and written word. The project will transform the lives of 800 children and young people identified as being vulnerable and at risk.

What is the purpose of the project?

Across key locations project leaders will be working with young people, opening them up to new opportunities by promoting self-esteem and resilience.
The project will help highly vulnerable young people from different communities, cultural and religious backgrounds to:

  • Reduce social isolation
  • Develop a deeper sense of community awareness
  • Successfully negotiate and manage a programme of personal development

During the 26-week programme participants will use digital media and info graphics to help tell their story, with people from a variety of backgrounds, they will learn new skills, have shared experiences and take part in residentials.

Who has funded Third Space?

The Third Space project is supported through €3.99m of EU funding under the PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU programmes Body (SEUPB).

Who can get involved?

Referrals are welcome from agencies and organisations working with young people from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. Referrals from organisations that support young people from the most marginalised and disadvantaged parts of society are particularly welcome. The Third Space may benefit young people in need of mental health support, those who are long term unemployed, young people living on interfaces and those living in rural isolation. Applications and referrals will be admitted on a rolling basis.

Where is the project being delivered?

The project will operate across, Belfast & Newtownabbey (covering North, West, South and East Belfast), Derry/Londonderry, Fermanagh, Cavan and Donegal

How long will participants be involved in the project?

Participants in the Third Space project will commit to taking part in a 6-month (26 week) programme, which will span 3-4 activities per week.

The Third Space Team

Andrea Doran - Director of Programming and Learning on behalf of Verbal
Andrea is the Director of programming and Learning on the Third Space project within Verbal.  She manages programme activity developed and delivered by Verbal along with all relationships and strategic partnerships that enable Verbal to deliver its vision, "a place were every story matters".   Andrea has over 10 years experience working in the community sector and specialism in working with vulnerable young people.  

Danny Bryce – Programme Manager on behalf of Extern
Danny is Programme Manager for the Third Space project.  Danny currently manages a number of projects within Extern, Time-out, Youth Support, Passport, Strength to Strength, Independent Visiting and Intensive Fostering Support.
 Danny has worked for Extern for 25 years as a volunteer, relief worker, full-time worker, co-ordinator, manager and now as programme manager. He has been involved with the organisation since he was a teenager taking part in cross community summer camps that Extern organised. Danny has provided support to thousands of children during his career as part of Extern’s children services team.

Mairead Fox – Project Manager on behalf of Verbal
Mairead will manage the Third Space project on behalf of Verbal and Extern. Within her role Mairead will oversee the creative management of the project and of the multi disciplinary team within Verbal, ensuring the vision "Every story matters" reverberates through the project. Mairead has over 5 years in the community and voluntary sector managing other projects in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area. 

Fergal Barr – Project Manager on behalf of Extern
Fergal will manage the Third Space project on behalf of Extern and Verbal.
